TRANSDISCIPLINARY

Sophie Clubb

Sophie is an interdisciplinary artist and curator with a BA in Fine Art. Sophie's artistic practice explores representations of women and the impacts of hyper sexual media on young women and girls. In undertaking a masters in Exhibition Studies, Sophie's curatorial practice and research has heavily focus on representation of women artists within art institutions and finding an alternative to these gender bias exhibition spaces. Having grown up in real Dorset Sophie's curatorial practice hopes to bring contemporary arts to wider audiences, making art accessible no matter where you are in the world.

Transdisciplinary Practice

Throughout this project I have been working as an interdisciplinary practitioner gathering research and method from a range of disciplines such as curation, gaming and 3D art design to create this virtuality exhibition. With "interdisciplinarity overflows the disciplines, but its goal still remains within the framework of disciplinary research. Interdisciplinarity even has the capacity of generating new disciplines, like quantum cosmology and chaos theory." (Nicolescu, 2014, pg. 187). Throughout this research I have implemented methods, techniques and technologies from different disciplines but i have remained within my disciplines framework so have not reached transdisclinarity.

In developing this project I have found that implementing new methodologies and learning new softwares such as Unity, have pushed the project further as well as being an interesting aspect for me as a researcher. However in developing this project further into the third semester I think that adapting the research approach to a multidisciplinary one will benefit the project in the long term. Increasingly these types of multidisciplinary teams are now the norm in creative arts practice, especially when driven by technological innovation” (Fleischmann and Hutchison, 2012, pg. 24), in creating a team to work on the exhibition rather than contenting to work as a solo practioner it will ensure that the final outcome is of a high quality. Although I have enjoyed working on this project alone, by incorporating the skills of others will mean that aspects of creating the exhibition that I have limited knowledge about will be produced to a higher quality than if I were to continue to work alone.

His practice explores the vast entanglement of interactions that organisms and non-human entities have with their environments. Previously he’s explored the movements of fungi, slugs, frogs, octopuses, sea anemones, gut flora and lichen. He’s also incorporated food preparation, planting and gardening into his work, as well as plants and ceramics in his installations.
